Outreach Specialist AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer Description
The Sewing Labs seeks to engage an AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer to assist in building a successful Workforce Development Program. The Workforce Development Specialist will increase community engagement for The Sewing Labs by:
Responsibilities:
- Creating a successful system to track students and graduate’s employment.
- Organizing job fairs for students and employers seeking trained stitchers (virtual and in-person).
- Building interview and employment skills for students into The Sewing Labs’
- Creating and managing a data system to track employment or entrepreneurship.
- Managing outside workforce relationships.
- Developing partnerships with other local nonprofits to recruit students into the program and create opportunities for program graduates to obtain employment.
- Creating and sustaining successful partnerships with area employers seeking trained sewists.
- Establishing and maintaining an apprenticeship/intern program for students with area employers seeking sewists.
- Helping to complete the necessary paperwork with state and local workforce agencies to enable them to engage in our program.
- Address needs for undocumented students’ post-class
Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 24 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following fields: Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Labor Economics, Education, Business, Personnel, Public Administration or Non Profit Studies.
Experience:
Technical or professional experience in social services, education, job placement, community organizations, business, personnel, public administration, or a closely related field.
- Intermediate knowledge of office procedures, practices, and equipment.
- Basic knowledge of the techniques and practices of interviewing and job placement.
- Basic knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing workforce development programs and activities.
- Basic knowledge of current local employment conditions and business practices in the public and private sectors.
- Basic knowledge of public relations functions.
- Basic knowledge of social, economic, and community issues impacting area businesses and employment opportunities.
- Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.
- Ability to communicate effectively and present information in a clear and concise manner.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, job seekers, employers, service providers, training institutions, community organizations, nonprofits, and other governmental, civic, labor, and public groups
