Literacy KC is a community-based nonprofit made up of adult learners, volunteer tutors, educators, staff, and community partners who believe literacy is a foundation for opportunity and belonging. We serve adults across the Kansas City metropolitan area who are working to improve reading, English language, digital, and communication skills in order to reach personal, educational, and career goals.
At its core, Literacy KC is a learning community — one that values dignity, lifelong learning, and the belief that every adult deserves access to education regardless of background or starting point. Our learners include individuals preparing for a high school equivalency credential, parents seeking to better support their children’s education, immigrants and refugees building new lives, and adults pursuing career advancement or greater independence.
Together, our learners, volunteers, and supporters form a network committed to strengthening individuals, families, and the broader Kansas City community through education.
What We Do
Literacy KC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping adults strengthen reading, language, digital, and communication skills so they can succeed in work, education, and everyday life. We provide free educational programs including Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency preparation, and English Language Learning classes for individuals seeking to build confidence and independence.
A key part of our impact comes through trained volunteers who tutor adult learners one-on-one or in small groups, supporting classroom instruction and helping learners practice reading, writing, and conversation skills.
Our programs connect literacy education to real-world outcomes by preparing learners for employment opportunities, supporting parents in their children’s education, assisting immigrants and refugees adjusting to life in the United States, and promoting economic mobility across the Kansas City region.
Through this work, we aim to ensure that adults have the skills needed to navigate healthcare, finances, employment opportunities, and community participation with confidence.
