Volunteer Opportunities From: Engage Rockhurst

A recent study by the Afterschool Alliance reports that parents face many barriers to enrolling their children in after-school programs. Top factors for parents not enrolling their students in these programs include expense (57%), students not having safe transportation to/from the program (52%), and after-school program locations are inconvenient (51%). Be a part of a team dedicated to eliminating these barriers.

Phoenix Family's HIKE (Help Instill the Key to Education) programs are located in apartment communities throughout Kansas City and are free of charge for the families in our communities. Students in K-8th grade can come from 4:30pm-6:00pm (3:00pm-5:00pm during summer) for a meal and engaging structured activities. For an hour and a half a week we are looking for volunteers to come and have fun while making a significant impact on the lives of our students and families. Volunteers will work one-on-one with students to improve their literacy skills. We'll provide all the training and support you need. We prepare the lesson plan and activities; you come and build confidence, encourage, and have fun! Sound like it might be for you? Here are the next steps:

Overview:

Phoenix Family is seeking patient, friendly, and tech-savvy volunteers to assist seniors in learning how to use technology in our new computer lab at a local senior affordable housing community. This role is essential in helping older adults feel more confident in navigating various digital tools, from basic computer functions to using the internet, email, navigating assistive technology, and social media.

Volunteers will provide hands-on guidance and one-on-one support during technology workshops and open lab hours. We will provide all the training you need. Sign up to help for a couple of hours each week or to offer classes occasionally as your availability allows!

Qualifications:

·      Strong understanding of basic computer operations, internet navigation, email, and social media platforms.

·      Patience and ability to explain technical concepts in simple, non-technical terms.

·      Enjoy working with seniors and demonstrating empathy and respect.

·      Excellent communication skills.

·      Previous volunteer or teaching experience is a plus but not required.

·      A positive attitude, reliability, and a willingness to learn new skills.

·      Ability to maintain resident confidentiality.

·      Background checks are required for regular recurring volunteers.
