Volunteer: Social Needs Navigator for Health Connect DeskThis is a great opportunity for anyone interested in social work or the medial field-- i.e. pre-med, pre-nursing, social work students, etc. Your service will be done in-clinic and can count as clinic experience! Nevertheless, anyone who is interested is welcome! See service description below. Children’s Mercy has a long legacy of caring for children and their families. Since its founding in 1897, Children’s Mercy has existed to help meet a community in need. Health is often thought to be all clinical and hospital based. However, research has shown that health does not start in our clinics but does start at home with things like having enough food to eat, a safe place to sleep and community support. This volunteer position helps address patients’ social determinants of health. The Health Connect volunteer position was created to support providers and patients during primary care clinic visits. Health Connects will navigate patients towards community-based organizations that can support their non-medical needs including food, clothing, utilities, and social support. Volunteers will need to successfully complete the Children's Mercy volunteer application and orientation before being trained for this position. We look forward to meeting you! Please apply at the link below and reach out if you are needing any assistance. Volunteer: Activities AssistantAre you looking for a career in recreation therapy and want to see what it would be like to work with older adults? Do you just enjoy being around older adults and want to contribute to improving their quality of life? Do you have something unique you’d like to share? We are opening our Independent Living apartments this Fall. In the Spring of 2020, we will open our Assisted Living and Memory Care Communities. This is a great opportunity to work with older adults with different physical and cognitive needs. You have your choice. Many of the activities will be similar between the communities, but adjusted to meet the needs of each individual and population. Your role in either of these communities is to assist the Community Life staff in setting up for and implementing activities. This could be calling Bingo, playing Balloon Ball, doing a craft activity, painting fingernails, etc. We would like a minimum of 2 hours a week for a period of nine months. You will receive a Volunteer Orientation that consists of Adult Abuse Awareness, Confidentiality, Safety Procedures, and Infection Control among other topics. You will be required to submit to a criminal background check and a TB test.
