Volunteer Opportunities From: Engage Rockhurst

Encourage physical activity by repainting kickball lines on the playground at Border Star Montessori, a KC Public School!

Support Westport Showers' mission to provide a warm shower, clean clothes, and breakfast to people living on KC's streets.  As a volunteer, your duties could include cleaning showers, serving food, handing out clothing, and providing hospitality/conversation.  Please note:

Plant trees on campus and in the surrounding neighborhood to commemorate National Arbor Day.  Our participation in this annual event is required for universities that have achieved Tree Campus USA status...an honor that Rockhurst has held for years. Items to note:

Help to build the Rockhurst University Eucharistic community by serving milkshakes at the famous Wednesday night Milkshake Mass!  Duties include: 

KC was recently determined to have the highest per capita percentage of houseless individuals in the United States.  Address this issue head on by joining the men of ADG for a day with Habitat for Humanity KC.  Previous experience/expert carpentry skills are not required.  Plan on departing Arrupe Circle at 8:00am and returning to campus by 3:00pm.  Please:

Rockhurst University students have planted 76 trees in the neighborhood and on campus since 2012!  Help to keep them alive and healthy by spreading mulch beneath them, which holds in moisture during the hot summer months.  Please:

- meet in the Rock Room at 5:15pm.  Plan to work until about 7:15pm.

- wear grubby clothes and boots or rugged/close-toed shoes.

Celebrate mass with residents at St. Anthony Assisted Living, then hang out for a post-mass social!  Please arrive Arrupe Circle at 3:30pm.  Plan to return to campus by 5:30pm.

Kick off Earth Week by participating in the Great Kansas City Cleanup, in which neighborhood associations, community groups, students, city staff and others will volunteer at litter and trash pickup events across the city, with support from multiple city departments such as KC Parks, Public Works, KC Water, and Neighborhood Services.  Please note:

1) Meet in the Rock Room at 9:00am.  We will walk to the sites.  Plan to work until noon

2) Trash bags and work gloves will be provided.

3) Wear grubby clothes and boots or rugged/close-toed shoes.

4) BYO water bottle.

Mathapalooza is an outreach program based out of Rockhurst University's Math department, engaging students from grades K-12 with hands-on inquiry. We focus primarily on incorporating math through activities and art as well. Volunteers are expected to supervise, help set up/clean-up events, engage with students, and ultimately have fun at each event. If the volunteer can't commit the full time, no problem we will coordinate accordingly to the time they can allocate. Let's have fun with Math!   

This STEAM event will be held Saturday, May 2nd from 9:00am - 5:00pm on the campus of Johnson County Community College.  The exact building/location of the event will be shared closer to the event date.  Car-pooling from Rockhurst to and from this event will likely be offered.   Plan to depart Rockhurst at 8:30am and return by 5:30pm.  

Celebrate Earth Day by joining the Missouri Department of Conservation and community members in cleaning up litter at Camp Lake of the Woods in nearby Swope Park.  Items to note:

This STEAM event will be held Thursday, March 26th from 5:00 - 7:00pm in the Convocation Center and Student Activities Hall.   

Improve our city's public transportation by cleaning the two city bus stops (north: parking garage, south: near the Alvin Brooks Center) that are adjacent to the Rockhurst campus.  This task takes 2-3 volunteers about one hour per week.  Service & Action supplies gloves and trash bags.  

Orientation Leaders and Coordinators provide an invaluable service to Rockhurst University for the hours they dedicate to ensuring that our new students are welcome!

Volunteer to shovel snow on an as-needed basis for Kansas Citians who, due to age or physical limitations, cannot clear their own sidewalk or driveway.  After registering as a Snow Angel, you will be notified via email when you are matched with a resident in need of assistance and will receive further instructions.
