THE JESUIT CHALLENGE
"You are called by the Society of Jesus to be men and women who reflect upon the reality of the world around you with all its ambiguities, opportunities, and challenges, to discern what is really happening in your life and in the lives of others, to find God there and to discover where God is calling you, to employ criteria for significant choices that reflect Godly values rather than narrow, exclusive self-interest, to make decisions in the light of what is truly for the greater glory of God and the service of those in need, and then to act accordingly."
Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S/U.
Superior General of the Society of Jesus, 1997
Service is an integral part of the student experience at Rockhurst University, and is required for graduation for some majors (engineering, computer science). All students, staff and faculty are invited to serve as called to by the mission and vision of the university. Through service, Rockhurst students come to ask questions about injustices in our society. Service is at the heart of Jesuit education because through service we enter into relationship and use the gifts we have developed to make a difference in the world, making it a better place for us all.
WHERE SHOULD YOU BEGIN
People have various reasons for getting involved in the community. Although there is not a wrong reason to get involved, it is important for you to be aware of your motivations so you can pick a service site that best fits your needs.
- Skills/Interests: What skills or interests would you like to share or acquire? This may include work or career experience.
- Issues: Is there a social issue concern with which you would like to work? Are there any with which you don’t want to work?
- Time Commitment: When can you volunteer? During the week or on the weekend? Night or day? Take transportation into account.
Remember, once you make a commitment with an organization, they will be depending on you.
Here are a list of tips to enhance your service learning experience.
AFTER YOUR EXPERIENCE
As one of the core values of Rockhurst, reflection and discernment is a component of the Rockhurst service experience. Students involved in service are encouraged to take time to examine the experience. One way to do this is through the Daily Examen that St. Ignatius practiced.
- Become aware of the context: Who is with you and what are you doing
- Review the experience with gratitude: What has brought you gratitude?
- Pay attention to your emotions: Where did you find joy and what was your low point
- Face your reality: What challenged you?
- Look toward the next experience: What can you learn from this experience that will help in your next one?
