Why should I “Become A Fan?”
Click Become a Fan of an organization where you enjoy doing service or are interested in doing service. That way, you’ll receive notifications about service opportunities from them on Engage.
How can I tailor volunteer opportunities to my interests?
Once you create a profile, you can indicate the social justice issues or type of work that is important to you through the "Interests" tab. When volunteer opportunities are posted that match your interest, you will be notified directly about that opportunity.
What is the criteria for service at Rockhurst?
Service is an integral part of the Rockhurst experience. As a Jesuit, Catholic institution, we prioritize service that accompanies those who are marginalized (due to socio-economic status, sexual identity/ orientation, race, ethnicity, nationality, ability, etc.) and service that sustains/ protects the environment.
Voluntary community service may be a one-time, short-term project or a lengthy, on-going commitment by a group or an individual. However, not everything done without pay is considered service. For projects to be considered service:
- There has to be a connection to a community outside of Rockhurst.
- The organization must be a nonprofit or public agency.
Why are my service hours missing from my dashboard?
You must log your hours in the Engage Rockhurst system. In general, hours are not automatically logged even if projects are signed up through Engage. After the service project is complete, log your hours.
How do I log my hours?
Here are the directions for logging hours.
- Log into your Engage Rockhurst Account
- Go to “Track Hours” under your profile
- You will see a list of any hours you have entered and a form to enter hours
- Under “Hour Type” select Yes (if you responded to an opportunity posted on Engage) or No (if you did not respond to a posted opportunity).
If Yes,
- Select the project from the drop down box.
- Fill in the number of hours and date
- Please answer the questions about your experience
- Click the blue button “Submit Hour Entry”
- Your site will verify hours before approving hours.
If No,
- Enter the contact information of the person who supervised your volunteer project.
- Enter the dates and hours that you served.
- Please answer the questions about your experience
- Click the blue button “Submit Hour Entry”
- The Center for Service Learning will verify hours with your contact before approving hours.
How do I log hours I completed in my home community or that were not listed on Engage?
Logging those individual hours not listed on Engage Rockhurst brings a different process.
- Log into your Engage Rockhurst Account
- Go to “Track Hours” under your profile
- You will see a list of any hours you have entered and a form to enter hours
- Under “Hour Type” select No
- Enter the contact information of the person who supervised your volunteer project.
- Enter the dates and hours that you served.
- Please answer the questions about your experience
- Upload a "Service Verification Form" if you have it completed
- Click the blue button “Submit Hour Entry”
After this process, the Center for Service Learning will contact the supervisor for their approval. The hours cannot be approved without verification from the service supervisor. You may choose to have the service supervisor verify your hours at the same time that you serve. You can ask the supervisor to sign the "Service Verification Form." When you enter the hours on Engage Rockhurst, you will have the option to upload the form directly to the site.
Do I have to log my hours after each visit to the community organization?
If you have an ongoing volunteer commitment, enter your cumulative hours at the end of the semester not after each visit. This will cut down on the number of emails that community partners receive. Even though the system does not allow for multiple dates or a date range, you may enter that information in the text box for additional information.
Do I have to log my hours that I complete with a student organization?
Yes. Log hours completed with a student organization as you would other hours. However, the hours will not be approved until the service chair submits the hours to the Center for Service Learning.
Why were my hours denied?
There are many reasons why the hours may have been denied. Here is a list of the most common issues with service hours:
- Contact information was incorrect. Our attempts to reach your contact for verification failed. If the email address you enter is bounced back to us, we will deny the service hours.
- Contact did not have record of your service. If you attend a project as part of a group, make sure the group leader turns in hours to the Center for Service Learning (if it is a student group). Some community agencies do not maintain records of volunteers and cannot verify hours. Please contact the Center for Service Learning to develop plan to verify hours if you volunteer at a site that does not record hours.
- Project does not meet the criteria of service. Service must extend beyond Rockhurst and benefit the broader community. As a Jesuit, Catholic institution, we prioritize service that accompanies those who are marginalized and service that sustains/ protects the environment. For more information about service at Rockhurst, please visit this webpage.
- Project was conducted prior to your enrollment at Rockhurst University. Engage Rockhurst is intended to record service completed while you are a student at Rockhurst. Any service completed prior to the start of your first semester is not counted.
- The date entered as project date is in the future. We can only verify project that have concluded. We will not verify projects scheduled for a future date.
- The hours were previously entered and approved. You can only enter your hours once. If the hours are entered through the kiosk feature, check-in feature or the app, you do not have to enter the hours again.
